Maybe it’s just me. Maybe not. I am proud of this industry. I am proud of the skills needed to clean a window properly. I am proud of how hard everyone works. I am proud of how professional window cleaners can be. And, that’s the key word: professionalism. This is not some fly-by-night thing. You do not just wake up one day and think, “Hey… I might clean a few windows today.” It’s a calling, a passion, a skill.
I once sent an outraged email to an advertising firm for their portrayal of a hi- rise window cleaner in a commercial. They showed two teens in high school. One used whatever product they were selling and ended up in a corner office on the 32nd floor. The other teen didn’t use said product and ended up hanging outside that office building by a harness and squeegeeing the windows. I know, right?! Stupid and poorly researched commercial. All window cleaning is a respectable profession, a skilled trade and a great way to earn a living. The fact that they assumed window cleaning would be viewed as a failure is annoying, to say the least.
Here’s another commercial I saw recently. Its not as bad, but still equally annoying. It’s a compilation of jobs these advertisers somehow (erroneously) view as low paid; window cleaning is at :09 seconds in …
