Pure Water Maintenance and Storage

Buying a Pure Water system for your window cleaning business is a big decision. Once you’ve made that decision, how do you use and maintain it to guarantee the best performance and the longest filter life?

Daily Startup Procedure

When you arrive at your first window cleaning job for the day, you may be tempted to just hook up and start cleaning. But for the best results, you’ll want to use this procedure for a multi-stage Pure Water system.

Best Practice: Always use your own garden hose to hook up to the water source. You never know when a customer’s hose was last used or what it was used for.

1. Turn on the water at the tap before hooking up your system to make sure there is no trapped debris.
2. Connect your system. Turn on the water, and open the waste water valve all the way.
3. Run water through the system until all of the trapped air is released. There should be a steady flow of water (no sputtering).
4. Shut the waste water valve, and test the TDS of the system output water. If it is less than 10, you are good to start cleaning windows.

With a DI-only system, the process is the same, except there’s no waste water valve.

Note: Your system’s procedures might be slightly different. It’s always best to refer to your user’s manual.

RO Membrane Maintenance

Once you’ve run water through your Pure Water system for the first time, make sure the RO membrane(s) are not allowed to dry out. This means you should run water through the machine at least once a month, even in the off-season. If you are unable to run water through the machine at least once a month, store your system by using a protective solution like ((IPC Eagle RO Protect)). Just mix it with water and add it to your RO membrane housing. DI-only systems, on the other hand, will be okay if left to sit for long periods of not being used.

Also, do not allow your multi-stage system to freeze. This will damage the RO membrane(s). If you live somewhere that freezes in the winter, the garage may not be the best place for your system. Keep it somewhere warmer, like a basement or closet. DI-only systems are more forgiving, and the filters will not be damaged if they freeze.

When the TDS starts to creep up on your multi-stage system, you may be tempted to change only the DI filter. For best RO membrane life, change the pre-filters at the same time. These filters remove harmful chlorine and larger particles from tap water, protecting the RO membrane(s).

Testing the Filters

If the TDS coming out at the brush starts to creep up, you can use a hand-held TDS meter to figure out what filter(s) need replacing.

1. Test the water at the tap, before the system. This will let you know what TDS you’re starting out with.
2. Test the water after the RO membrane(s). If they’re doing their job, the TDS should be 80-90% less than when it came out of the tap. If they’re filtering less than that, it’s time for a change.
3. Test the water after the DI filter. The TDS should be at 000 but no higher than 010. Water over 010 will start to leave spots on the windows and means it’s time to change the smaller filters.

Check your Pure Water system’s user manual for manufacturer’s suggested filter replacement and procedures on changing the filters in your particular machine.

A correctly maintained Pure Water system will give you good results and the longest filter life possible. The RO membrane(s) will most likely last a dozen or more changes of the DI and pre-filters.
