It is time to think about Stretching your Work Season

It’s September, in some parts of the country the window cleaning season will be winding down in the next few months. The key to success in the window cleaning industry as a whole, is creating a 12-month business schedule. Some window cleaners in the north choose to work cray hours, 12-hour days for 7 days a week and then sleep during the winter months. Many window cleaners in the winter month want more of a balance. Without consistent work it can be stressful and can create a financial strain. And, if you have independent contractors, it is unlikely that they will be able to access the state’s unemployment during the off-season. So the question is, how do you extend your season?

1. Gutter cleaning. Although gutters are not everyone’s favorite job, it’s needed every fall and homeowners are more than willing to pay for it. In fact, your current customer base is the perfect place to start adding on their fall window cleaning service. You know that most homeowners do not want to or physically can’t climb atop a ladder to clean windows. Chances are that they do not want to climb that ladder to clean out the gutters either. Plus, if it doesn’t get done, the debris in the gutters may freeze and cause an ice build-up and possible leak.

2. Christmas lights. If you are comfortable with ladders, Christmas lights is another lucrative option. Many people are afraid of heights. There has been an increase in need for people to hang lights. Offer to hang the lights right after you clean those gutters – for a fee, of course. Be sure to factor in removing them in January.

3. Big Events. Let your customers, both residential and commercial, know that you work year round. Send them little reminder notices, a newsletter or even a friendly call. Tell them you clean windows around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s or a big event. Some people use this time to offer gift cards for friends and family to use in the future.

Even though work may come easily for a majority of the year, you may have to think outside of the box in the slow season. Special events and special offers. You can stretch your window cleaning season a little each year and build a business that is 12-months a year in no time.
