The Science Behind a Streak-Free Shine

Every professional window cleaner knows the feeling. You finish a pane, step back to admire your work, and then the sunlight hits at just the right angle.  

There it is. A streak. 

It’s tempting to blame the squeegee, the soap, the towel—or maybe just bad luck. But achieving consistently clean, streak-free glass actually involves some surprisingly interesting science. 

Water chemistry, surface tension, evaporation, dissolved minerals, detergents, temperatures, and even the condition of your squeegee rubber can all influence the final result. 

So, what exactly is happening on the glass? 

Glass Isn’t Quite as Smooth as It Looks 

To the naked eye, a pane of glass looks perfectly smooth. At a microscopic level, however, the surface is much more complex. 

Tiny irregularities on the surface can interact with water, oils, minerals, dust, fingerprints, environmental contaminants, and cleaning chemicals. The International Window Cleaning Association (IWCA) notes that glass viewed microscopically contains peaks and valleys rather than being perfectly flat. 

That helps explain why simply putting water on dirty glass isn’t enough. The goal of professional window cleaning is really a sequence: 

Loosen the contamination → suspend it in the cleaning solution → remove the dirty solution → leave as little residue behind as possible. 

When any part of that process is incomplete, streaks, haze, smears, or spots can appear. 

Surface Tension: Why Soap Makes Water Work Better 

Water molecules are strongly attracted to one another. This creates surface tension, which is why plain water tends to bead up on certain surfaces rather than spreading into a uniform sheet.  

Window cleaning detergents contain surfactants that reduce this surface tension. In practical terms, a good window cleaning solution helps water spread across the glass and get underneath dirt, oils, fingerprints, and other contaminants. 

That familiar slippery glide you feel while working a squeegee isn’t just convenient. Proper lubrication allows the rubber to move smoothly across the glass while helping the cleaning solution carry contamination away. However, more soap doesn’t necessarily mean cleaner glass. 

The “More Soap the Better” Trap 

It’s easy to assume that if a little detergent cleans well, a lot should clean even better. Not so fast. 

Detergent needs to perform its job and then leave the glass with the dirty water. Excessive detergent can increase the amount of material that needs to be completely removed from the surface. 

If traces remain behind, you may see: 

  • Haze 
  • Smearing 
  • Streaks 
  • A film that becomes especially noticeable in direct sunlight 

The ideal concentration depends on the detergent, water conditions, temperature, soil level, and cleaning technique. 

For professionals, the goal isn’t to create the biggest bucket of suds. It’s to use enough cleaning solution to effectively loosen contamination and provide proper glide without unnecessarily loading the glass with residue-producing material. 

The Squeegee Is Doing More Than You Think 

A Professional squeegee looks incredibly simple: handle, channel and rubber. But the rubber edge is performing precision work. As the squeegee moves across the glass, the rubber needs to maintain consistent contact with the surface while directing the cleaning solution away. 

Several small problems can interfere with that process: 

Worn rubber: A nick, rounded edge, or damaged corner can leave water behind. 

Incorrect pressure: Too little pressure can leave water behind, while excessive pressure may distort the rubber and interfere with a smooth pass. 

Poor angle: The relationship between the rubber, glass, and direction of travel affects how efficiently water is removed. 

Dirty rubber: Debris trapped along the edge can create lines across an otherwise perfectly clean pane. That’s why professional cleaners often notice an immediate improvement after flipping or replacing worn squeegee rubber. Sometimes the difference between frustrating streaks and a perfect finish costs only a few dollars in fresh rubber.  

Evaporation Is Working Against You 

Ever notice how much harder window cleaning becomes when you’re working on hot glass in direct sunlight? There’s a scientific reason.  

Heat increases the rate at which water evaporates. If your cleaning solution begins drying before you can remove it, dissolved contaminants and cleaning agents can remain behind on the glass. That creates the familiar situation where you feel like you’re racing against the window. 

Whenever possible, professional cleaners can compensate by: 

  • Working smaller sections 
  • Keeping the glass sufficiently wet 
  • Adjusting the amount of cleaning solution 
  • Changing their cleaning sequence 
  • Working shaded glass before sun-exposed glass when practical 
  • Use specially formulated additives like Winsol Super Slip, Titan Glass Gleam Glide, or Sorbo Squeegee Glide. These additives slow down the evaporation process and create a little more slip, which in turn creates less rubber fatigue. 

The hotter and faster the water evaporates, the smaller your margin for error becomes.  

Water Quality Matters More Than Most People Realize 

Water itself can be part of the problem. Tap water isn’t just H₂O. Depending on where you live, it can contain varying concentrations of dissolved minerals and other substances. When the water evaporates, the water molecules leave—but dissolved material can remain. That’s the basic science behind many water spots. 

The IWCA explains that mineral composition matters when dealing with hard-water deposits. Calcium and magnesium are commonly associated with hard water, while dissolved silicates can create particularly stubborn deposits on glass. This is also why professional pure-water window cleaning systems are so effective.  

Why Pure Water Can Dry Spot-Free 

Water-fed pole systems turn the traditional window cleaning process upside down. Instead of putting solution on the glass and mechanically removing the water with a squeegee, a properly functioning pure-water system allows the final rinse of water to remain on the glass and evaporate naturally. 

How can that possibly work? 

Because the minerals that normally remain after evaporation have already been removed. Professional systems typically use reverse osmosis (RO), deionization (DI), or a combination of the two to dramatically reduce dissolved solids in the source water. The IWCA’s guidance for pure-water cleaning states that rinse water should have a total dissolved solids (TDS) level of 10 PPM or less to prevent spotting and streaking.  

In practice, many professional window cleaners prefer operating at considerably lower TDS levels for additional confidence in their finished results. 

The concept is beautifully simple: 

If clean water contains virtually nothing, there is virtually nothing left behind when the water evaporates. 

That is the science behind the spot-free rinse. 

But Pure Water Doesn’t Automatically Mean Clean Glass 

There’s an important distinction between pure water and a clean window. Pure water can dry without mineral spotting, but contaminants still have to be removed from the glass first. That is why proper agitation and rinsing are critical when using a water-fed pole. The brush loosens and lifts contamination. The purified water carries that contamination away. The final rinse should leave only clean, purified water on the surface. If dirt remains because the glass wasn’t sufficiently scrubbed—or dirty water isn’t thoroughly rinsed away—you can still get spotting or an unsatisfactory finish. IWCA water-fed guidance specifically identifies inadequate scrubbing and rinsing as potential causes of spotting. 

In other words: Pure water isn’t magic. It’s chemistry combined with good technique. 

Towels Have Science Behind Them, Too 

Detail towels may seem like the simplest part of the process, but they can make or break the final result. A towel needs to absorb moisture and contamination without redepositing lint, detergent, fabric softener, oils, or other residues onto the glass. That’s one reason professional window cleaners tend to be particular about their towels. 

If your towel has been washed with too much detergent or fabric softener, residues within the fibers can potentially transfer back onto the surface you’re trying to detail. A clean, absorbent, low-lint towel allows you to detail edges and corners while disturbing as little of the finished glass as possible. And technique matters here too. If you’re repeatedly wiping the entire pane after squeegeeing, you’re giving yourself additional opportunies to introduce streaks. Ideally, the squeegee does the majority of the work, and the towel handles the details. 

Why You Suddenly See Streaks When the Sun Comes Out 

One of the most frustrating experiences in window cleaning is finishing a window that looks perfect—until direct sunlight reveals every tiny imperfection. The sunlight didn’t create the streak. It revealed it.  

Changes in lighting angle make tiny differences in residue, moisture, film, or contamination much easier for your eyes to detect. That’s why professional window cleaners learn to inspect their work from different angles whenever possible. The glass may look crystal clear while you’re standing directly in front of it but tell a completely different story when viewed from the side.  

The Streak-Free Formula 

So what does science tell us about achieving consistently great results?  

It comes down to controlling several variables: 

Clean water + proper detergent concentration + sufficient agitation + quality tools + complete removal or rinsing + minimal residue = better looking glass. 

Traditional window cleaning accomplishes this by loosening contamination and physically removing the dirty solution with a squeegee.  

Pure-water window cleaning accomplishes it by loosening contamination, thoroughly rinsing it away, and leaving sufficiently purified water behind to evaporate without significant mineral residue.  

Different methods. 

Same objective. 

Remove the dirt without leaving something else behind. 

Professional Results Start With Professional Equipment 

Technique will always matter, but good equipment makes good technique easier. Fresh squeegee rubber, properly designed channels and handles, professional detergents, quality towels, effective scrubbers, properly maintained brushes, and well-functioning pure-water equipment all help eliminate variables that can interfere with the finished product.
