Fall usually brings a slow-down to the window cleaning business, but there are ways to increase your profit before the snow starts flying. Add-on services provide added value to your customers and greater profit to you, the window cleaner. Over the next few posts, I will be touching on some of these add-on services.
This week, we’ll discuss gutter cleaning.
Why Clean Gutters?
Gutters are a necessity for the proper drainage of rain water. Their purpose is to keep water from gathering around the foundation of the house. Rain water gathering at the foundation can cause serious structural damage.
A clogged gutter drops water wherever it can most easily go, instead of through the proper drainage path. This can also lead to damaging accumulations of icicles in the winter, which can cause further damage to gutters.
Clean gutters have a number of benefits:
- Better drainage
- Better looks
- Zero property damage
Gutters collect all manner of debris – leaves, moss, and other plant life, as well as birds that may nest in this plant material and cause an even bigger mess. This debris is easy to remove with the correct tools, which makes gutter cleaning a great add-on service for window cleaners.
Problems to Keep in Mind
One potential problem to keep in mind when cleaning gutters is severely neglected and damaged gutters. Some gutters may be beyond the help of cleaning.
Beware of gutters that are bent or pulling away from the roof because of neglect. Long periods of being clogged can cause unnecessary weight on the gutter, causing it to sag and pull away from the roof. These gutters may break away causing damage and potential fall risks to cleaners.
If in doubt, decline to clean gutters that are in really poor shape.

Historically, I am the guy that goes to clean objects around my home and I end up wrecking them because I didn’t fully know what I was doing. Are there any cleaning agents for gutters that could wreck the weather protective coating and other elements of the gutter’s physical integrity? It wouldn’t do well to wreck my gutters right before winter kicks in.

Jamie, it’s pretty neat how you created a list of the tools to use to clean the inside gutters and the outside gutters. I myself have been trying to find tools and any type of gutter cleaners to clean the ones that are in my house. The last time my brother checked them, he told me that there was a mold buildup inside them.

Gutter is such a small part of our house but can play a huge role. A simple good cleaning of gutters can help a ton. It seems like it is easier and less expensive to maintain a rain gutter than to install a new one. Thanks for the tips.

I agree that cleaning gutters helps you avoid property damage. I think one common way not doing so could damage your property is by water flooding your yard due to improper drainage. I think it can also lead to mud stains on the driveway and sidewalks.

Great post, I appreciate that you spoke about the importance of gutters. Because if the gutters are too full, they could collapse off the roof of your home, causing damage to the shingles of the roof and the exterior of the house. Very nice and helpful information. Thanks for posting.

Just wanted to add some basic information clean out your system twice a year to avoid seasonal hazards that can take a small issue and create a large promblen. you should clear out your gutters before winter to avoid starin on the system , fasterners and fascia it self being weighted down by frowen leaves branches etc. Loose or pulling away gutter could be a indicator of a larger problem, best to call a profesional for these instances.
